Spring Football Notebook: March 30

Morgan Newton at Kentucky

Morgan Newton looked sharp again on Wednesday during spring practice No. 5.

Rain and cold weather forced the Wildcats into the Nutter Fieldhouse again on Wednesday for their fifth day of spring football practice.

"I was pleased with both of the quarterbacks," UK coach Joker Phillips said. "It's a process. If you looked at the way our spring practices looked last spring, especially at the throw game, the throw game was horrendous. But if you look at the stats now, we were second in the league in passing yardage, so we'll continue to get better as long as the quarterbacks continue to study and progress the way they can."

Junior Morgan Newton completed several deep balls for would-be touchdowns during the workout and seems to be developing a strong chemistry with new No. 1 wideout La'Rod King. Grayshirt freshman Maxwell Smith also looked good throwing the ball downfield.

"He's still a freshman. He's going to hold on to the ball a little longer than needed and sometimes doesn't realize the speed that the game is played at this level," Phillips said, "but he knows what to do and plays with great fundamentals. The ball comes out of his hand as good as anyone we've ever had at this stage.

"Both of the quarterbacks were good. They've got to build on this. They can't go backwards. They've got to continue to build on what they did today."

Phillips said the Cats will have a "passing scrimmage" on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium in order to further evaluate that part of the offense.
